How much does electrical or smart home work cost? What affects the price
It’s the first question most people ask, and the honest answer is that it depends on the property and what you want from it. Here’s what actually drives the price, how we put a quote together, and how to keep costs under control.
Why there’s no single price
Two homes on the same street can cost very different amounts to rewire or automate. The size of the job, how easy it is to get cables in, the products you choose and the state of the existing installation all make a difference. A fixed price list would either overcharge simple jobs or leave out the work a complex one needs.
What affects the cost
- The number of points. Every light, switch, socket, data point, camera and sensor is a “point”. More points means more cable, more parts and more time.
- Access and timing. Work done during a renovation, with floors up and walls open, is far quicker than chasing cables into a finished, decorated home.
- The building. Period properties, solid walls, basements and listed buildings take more care than modern construction.
- The specification. The brand and range of keypads, fittings, cameras and control systems, and whether the system is wired or wireless.
- The existing installation. An old consumer unit, missing earthing or bonding, or faults found on testing may need putting right before new work can be connected.
- Design and programming. Smart systems need scenes, schedules and apps set up properly. That commissioning time is part of the job, not an extra.
How we quote
After a free site visit, or from your architect’s drawings, we send a quote broken down room by room and point by point. You can see exactly where the money goes and easily add or remove items. Testing, certification and building control notification are included, so there are no surprises at the end.
Ways to keep costs down
- Plan electrics and data early in a renovation, before the plastering starts.
- Decide your specification up front, because late changes cost more than early ones.
- In a finished home, consider wireless lighting control and security, which avoid most of the making good.
- Phase the work: install the cabling now and add keypads, cameras or automation later.
